Mount Semeru is the most popular volcanoes in Java island, located in the heart of Indonesia’s Ring of Fire. Mount Semeru (3,676 m) is the highest summit in Java. The mountain offers a good trail, a gorgeous savanna walk and a stunning campsite alongside the turquoise water and green hills of Ranu Kumbolo lake.   • Altitude  3,676 meters above sea level – MASL, it is the highest mountain also the highest volcano in Java.
  • Trekking distance 42 km (back and forth) from the entry point in Ranu Pane to the top of Mt Semeru.
  • Altitude gain 1,576 meters
  • Trail started at 2,100 MASL in Ranu Pane
  • Main campsite Ranu Kumbolo  is at  2,400 MASL (distance from starting point is 10,5 km)
  • The last campsite is Kalimati campsite is at 2,700 MASL (distance to Ranu Kumbolo campsite is 7.5 Km and distance to the top of Mt Semeru is 3 km
  • The best part of Mt Semerus trail begins from Ranu Pane to Kalimati campsite (18 km from Ranu Pane), where the trail takes us first over the agriculture land, and then climb steadily through tropical rainforest, where you’ll be rewarded with the first glimpse of the top of Mount Semeru and in the next couple of hours, you will find yourself staring at the turquoise blue water of Ranu Kumbolo lake. After Ranu Kumbolo campsite, it’s continue with an easy hiking across savanna landscapes with pine forest hills in between.
  • The most challenging part is on the last 3 km from Kalimati campsite to the top of Mt Semeru with 976 meters of altitude gain
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate to Challenging

  • The national park put a strict 600 people threshold per day to preserve the environment of Mount Semeru. Visitors are encouraged to confirm the booking way in advance to secure the spot. Depends on the season, the quota fill up fairly quickly starting from 3 months until 3 days in advance of the hiking day. Holidays and weekends are definitely the most booked days
  • Furthermore, every hiker must present a health certificate/ fit to climb letter from a clinic or doctor during registration to prove they have an adequate level of fitness. In practice, this will be a simple medical checkup at local clinic that has to be conducted one day before hiking day.
  • The National Park recommends the climb only until Kalimati campsite, thus the National Park insurance only cover until safe hiking zone in Kalimati. Climbers still allow to climb the peak of Mt Semeru but at their own risk.
  • Every year Mt Semeru hiking trails is closed starting Jan. 1 until end of March. The closure aims to restore the ecosystem along the trails, which comprises a vast number of flora and fauna species. So if you planned to climb Mt Semeru in April, it will be one of the best times, while the trails are still fresh.  Please be advised you should make a booking as early as possible for April’s climb,
