Deep in Siberut Island, in the Mentawai archipelago, lies one of Indonesia’s most distinctive indigenous cultures. Far from the modern cities of Sumatra, communities in the interior of Siberut continue to maintain traditions, beliefs, and a way of life deeply connected to the surrounding rainforest.
Travel by river and on foot into remote Mentawai territory, following jungle trails to traditional settlements where the Uma, the communal ancestral house, remains at the heart of family and social life. Stay with a local family and experience daily life from within the community rather than simply visiting as an observer.
Spend time with Mentawai families and learn about their relationship with the forest, traditional hunting and food gathering, medicinal plants, craftsmanship, and the spiritual traditions of the Sikerei, Mentawai shamans and traditional healers. Discover the stories behind their distinctive tattoos, traditionally associated with identity, spirituality, and their connection with nature.
Days follow the rhythm of the rainforest, walking jungle trails, crossing rivers, sharing meals in the Uma, listening to stories, and witnessing traditions passed from one generation to the next.
This is not a staged cultural attraction or a luxury experience. It is an opportunity to travel slowly and respectfully into the heart of Siberut and discover one of the last places where traditional Mentawai forest culture remains part of everyday life.
Raw, remote, and deeply human, this is Mentawai beyond the surf breaks.
