Carstensz Pyramid Expedition

At 4,884 meters above sea level, the Carstensz Pyramid is the highest mountain in Indonesia and one of the world’s Seven Summits. This majestic limestone monument rises dramatically from the dense jungle in the central highlands of Papua Province.

The expedition to Carstensz Pyramid offers an exhilarating adventure that combines classic rock climbing with the thrill of exploring a remote and pristine environment. Reaching the base of the mountain involves traversing rugged terrain and dense jungle, adding a sense of wilderness exploration.

The climb itself is a technical challenge, requiring climbers to follow fixed ropes up slabs and corners on the north face to reach the summit ridge. The lower section involves scrambling and rock climbing, demanding endurance and agility. On the summit ridge, climbers must navigate several technical sections, testing their rope work skills and climbing expertise.

Due to the technical nature of the climb, team members must have appropriate rope work skills and rock climbing experience to safely and successfully reach the summit. The ascent not only provides a physical challenge but also rewards climbers with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Carstensz Pyramid offers adventurers an unforgettable high-altitude climbing experience amidst the beauty of nature.

What to Prepare and What to Expect

Technical Rock Climbing: The main challenge on Carstensz is technical rock climbing rather than the rigors of high-altitude climbing. Therefore, team members need to have appropriate rope work skills and rock climbing experience. The climb is made from base camp and usually takes 8-10 hours for a round trip.

Flexibility: The Carstensz Pyramid expedition contains a degree of uncertainty, with the potential for political and social upheaval that might prompt last-minute itinerary changes. It is essential to approach this challenge with great flexibility, as dates and itineraries can change.
