Semeru, the highest volcano in Java

Java highest point lies in the East on Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The highest point at 3.676 meters is an active  volcanic cone which at times erupt every 20 minutes. It is called Mahameru (great mountain) or Semeru (Su-meru which in Javanese also means great Mountain). The national park  50,276.20hectares area consist of two mountains  (Bromo and Semeru) as well as Tengger range.

Semeru lies in the southern end of a series of calderas. The route to the summit goes through crater lakes, Ranu Pani, Ranu Kumbolo,  and other smaller meadows. En route the wildlife sighting consist of pangolin (Manis javanica), spotted panther (Panthera pardus), deer (Muntiacus muntjak), monkey (Prebytis sp.), long tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis), and java hornbill .

Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park lies in four district, Lumajang, Malang,  Probolinggo and Pasuruan. Entrance is from the village of Ranu Pani in Malang. The closest airport is in  Malang or Surabaya. From there you take car ride to Tumpang village where the park office located. Change to an offroad jeep to Ranu Pani where the information and re –registrastion is located. All in all the car ride would take around 6 to 8hours from both airport to Ranu Pani villages.
